6 Ways You Can Help Your Loved Ones Prevent Falls
For older people, falls can result in broken bones, hip fractures, and, in some cases, even head injuries. Because we observe Falls Prevention Week later this month, today Dr. Ross Cohen of The Foot & Ankle Center of Maryland in Anne Arundel County, Maryland is sharing six steps to assist your loved ones to reduce their risk of falling.
1. Talk about their health status right now. Determine if your senior loved one is experiencing any issues with managing their health. Also make sure they’re taking advantage of all the benefits offered under Medicare, such as the Annual Wellness visit.
2. Get their assistance in taking steps to keep them safe. Ask your loved one if they are worried about falling. Many seniors realize that they are at risk, but they believe they won’t get hurt, even if they’ve already fallen in the past.
3. Discuss their last eye examination. If your loved one wears glasses, be sure their prescription is current. Wearing light-responsive lenses can be dangerous when moving from the bright sun into darker buildings. For those seniors already struggling with low vision, consult a specialist for ways to improve their eyesight.
4. Discuss their medications. If your loved one is having a difficult time keeping track of their meds or is having side effects, urge them to discuss their worries with their pharmacist and doctor. Encourage them to have their medications reviewed each time they receive a new prescription.
5. Take notice. Observe them to see if they’re holding onto furniture, walls, or someone else when walking. These signs indicate that it might be time to see a physical therapist to help them improve their strength, gait, and balance with exercise.
6. Conduct a home safety assessment. There are many simple ways to make a home safer such as lighting, stair rails, and grab bars in the bathroom. For greater safety, consider using a hand-held shower and a shower chair.
